Stop Killing Christians
Dear Family,
As you read this email, Christians in Nigeria—our brothers and sisters—are being martyred for their faith. In fact, there are more documented cases of Christian martyrdom in Nigeria than every other country combined!
I have traveled to Nigeria twice. The first time was to interview girls whose parents had been killed by radical Muslims, leaving them orphaned. The second time, I went to film a short video. I visited a Christian village that had been raided at night by radical Muslims when the men of the village were away at work. The attackers drove the women and children into a large net and while they were tangled in the netting, the Muslims killed them with their machetes.
Nigeria is, in my opinion, the most dangerous country in the world to be a Christian. Last year alone, 4,650 of our brothers and sisters were martyred and thousands more were kidnapped.
Coffins are prepared for burial during a funeral service for 17 worshippers and two priests killed in central Nigeria.

Early this year, I learned about the martyrdom of college student Deborah Samuel. It is such a heartbreaking story. Deborah had posted on social media that Jesus had helped her earn good grades. Radical Muslim students took offense and ultimately dragged her out of class, beat her to death, and set her body on fire. We included actual scenes of this attack on a short video we just produced. And, while Deborah’s case is horrific, it has now become a daily, almost hourly, occurrence in Nigeria.
Deborah Samuel, student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was beaten to death and burned by fellow students over allegations of blasphemy.
If all of this isn’t bad enough, last year, our government removed Nigeria from a persecution and religious liberty watch list. I couldn’t believe it when I heard about it. I spoke with an attorney and others working with the US State Department, and they are appalled with this decision too.
While the watch list (called the Countries of Particular Concern, “CPC,” list) doesn’t stop Christian persecution, removing them from the list has sent a clear message that we don’t care. We are turning a blind eye to the killing of Christians in Nigeria. And removing Nigeria from the CPC list has only served to embolden the attackers and remove pressure from the Nigerian government to protect its Christian citizens.
The attackers who beat and killed Deborah Samuel have only been charged with disturbing the peace! Enough is enough. It’s time we stand up for our brothers and sisters in Nigeria.

While the US State Department makes recommendations to which country belongs on the CPC list, it is President Joe Biden who has final say. He is the only one who can put Nigeria back on the list. We have committed to collect as many petition signatures as possible to show him that we care about our brothers and sisters in Nigeria, and if any country deserves to be on the watch list, it is Nigeria!

There are people working hard in Washington D.C. to pressure President Biden to place Nigeria back on the watch list. But, to-date, it has not been enough. I believe that outside pressure will help.
